A good example is the D1788PK, which is available bundled with two sets of headphones and a headrest mount/carrying bag. The ability to connect two sets of headphones at the same time is a real bonus. The built-in speakers are somewhat tinny, though you can connect a pair of external speakers if desired. This model comes with a 7″ screen, offering a 16:9 aspect ratio, a rechargeable battery and credit-card sized remote control. A car cigarette lighter power adapter is included: very useful as the batteries only last for 2.5 to 3 hours.
For under $100, it’s a great way to keep your kids entertained on long car journeys.
Audiovox also produce a fantastic overhead design called the VOD10. It consists of a 10″ 16:9 screen with built-in DVD player and 2 sets of wireless headphones. This roof-mountable system is certainly much neater than the headrest type, though obviously needs permanent installation. The DVD is the slot-loading type, so there’s no danger of damaging a flimsy loading tray. It ships with a wireless remote. Usually it sells for $500 – $600, though it’s currently on offer here
for $387.57.
